Award 2022

The winners of the University Innovation Challenge 2022 have finally been announced.
During the award ceremony on October 27, 2022 in Frankfurt, we determined the winners. Within a direct category battle, the finalists again had the opportunity to pitch their business model.

Artifical Intelligence

Winner BAUTA

Advertising thrives on its reach. It’s easy to see how big that reach is online. In the physical world, however, things look quite different. How many people perceive an analog advertising space often remains unclear.
BAUTA has developed a solution to this problem: A sensor with the help of which frequency and impression data can be collected anonymously and evaluated uniformly in a user interface. Thanks to the so-called “Privacy by Design” sensor, the information can be made available – and without interfering with the privacy of recorded persons. This is because, unlike smart cameras, the image sequences are not anonymized after the fact.

Finalist GEMEDICO

Using artificial intelligence to detect prostate carcinomas – this is what Gemedico wants to make possible with its “PAIRADS” project. The evaluation of prostate MRIs is one of the most complex and difficult evaluations in radiology and takes a correspondingly long time.
Gemedico’s AI uses the MRI images to detect, localize and evaluate the prostate in which a pre-cancerous condition can be detected. It also determines the volume of the prostate. This provides radiologists with a second opinion within minutes, which they can use to confirm or re-evaluate their diagnosis. This reduces the workload of radiologists and frees up time for them to focus on their patients.

Future Enginieering

Winner FIBRECOAT

A low-cost alternative to conventional metal yarn has been developed by the team at FibreCoat. The so-called basalt fibers, which are coated with aluminum, can be used, for example, to shield security-relevant buildings or the electronics in airplanes and cars.
The fibers can also be used to produce textiles with integrated sensors. And in other respects, too, the innovative metal yarn has the same properties as previously used metal yarns. With the crucial difference that FibreCoat’s metal yarn can be produced much more cheaply thanks to the carrier basalt.

Finalist LUBIS EDA

The semiconductor crisis continues, slowing down companies that depend on other countries and complex supply chains for semiconductor manufacturing. But semiconductor development can also become a challenge that leaves no room for error. This is exactly where LUBIS EDA comes in – with software that is able to develop semiconductors cheaper, faster and error-free. Specifically, LUBIS EDA offers formal verification of semiconductors, which helps to detect and correct potential errors at an early stage.
This not only saves valuable time, but also development costs. Once verification is complete, it’s time to move on to physical manufacturing.

Future Digital Working

Finalist TEAMECHO

A digital mood barometer for companies – this sums up the idea behind TeamEcho. The mood barometer gives employees a strong voice and managers a basis for decision-making in order to create better cooperation. The goal is to jointly create an agile, motivating feedback culture in which all employees can develop their full potential. Submitted feedback is immediately encrypted and anonymized and cannot be attributed to individual people.
TeamEcho is offered as a software-as-a-service and is ready to use on all internet-enabled devices. Access is via the web browser.

Winner WERKULES

Software that helps craft businesses keep track of what’s happening on construction sites – that’s what Werkules offers. The associated app records and evaluates wage, material, subcontractor and storage costs, among other things. This enables construction companies, for example, to better coordinate their resources and thus increase their profitability. In addition, all internal company processes are digitized and integrated with one another. This not only makes organization easier for users, but also offers extensive controlling options.
Werkules is offered as a software-as-a-service, is web-based, independent of time and location, and is not tied to a specific operating system or device.

Future Finances & Commerce

Winner SOLAX

SOLA-X is a decentralized exchange for cryptocurrencies and digital assets. It is based on the Solana Blockchain, which stands out for being the fastest and most environmentally friendly protocol – with the lowest energy consumption of all current blockchains.
The goal behind SOLA-X is to make all active cryptocurrencies exchangeable on one side and interoperable on the other, becoming a kind of “money exchange” for the Web 3.0 and the Metaverse. This is made possible thanks to built-in token bridge.
The platform exists entirely on the blockchain and is thus particularly resilient to cyber attacks. In doing so, it is completely self-sufficient and more laxly efficient than comparable centralized trading platforms.

Finalist SQ SOLUTIONS

“SQustody” is the name of SQ Solutions’ asset management solution aimed at large institutions in the financial industry. A custom-fit blockchain technology optimizes asset management processes and enables investments in and management of digital assets, which are increasingly a part of the overall portfolio for institutional investors.
Specifically, SQustody combines traditional and centralized transaction processing in legacy systems with decentralized transaction processing and the blockchain ecosystem. Technologically, SQustody is designed to easily integrate with existing IT infrastructure of large financial services providers.

Future Life Science

Finalist BIOTHRUST

The supply of oxygen to organisms and cells is a fundamental factor for the process efficiency of fermentations. Currently, oxygen is introduced into the bioreactor as a gas bubble, which leads to harmful shear forces and foam formation. With innovative gassing solutions, BioThrust aims to make the gassing of bioreactors more efficient and gentle, thus significantly increasing the yield of biotechnological processes.
BioThrust’s membrane module is the only one of its kind in the world, enabling sufficient bubble-free gassing of bioreactors for the first time. With the help of this significantly gentler gas supply, process yields can be increased by up to 200 percent in some cases.

Winner PATRONUS HEALTH

Patronus Health’s Prehab App offers patients undergoing major abdominal or thoracic surgery an individualized and digital prehabilitation program. Specifically, it is a three- to six-week training program that is conducted at home and under the supervision of the attending physician. The goal of the program is to optimize patients before surgery, making them more resilient to the stresses of major surgery. Use of the program decreases the incidence of complications by up to 50%, reduces costs by up to 30%, and improves quality of life after surgery.
